Roger Federer became the first Swiss man to capture a Grand Slam singles title after defeating Australian Mark Philippoussis 76(5) 62 76(3) in the 2003 Wimbledon men's singles final. The 21-year-old dropped only one set in seven matches and is only the fourth man to win both junior and senior titles at Wimbledon.

"I was joking as a boy that I was going to win this cup and now I have it. I'm just so happy", said Federer, who had been close to withdrawing from the tournament after hurting his back in his round of 16 match with Feliciano Lopez.

American Serena Williams made up for her disappointment at Roland Garros by defeating sister Venus in the women's singles final for the second successive year
46 64 62. Venus, who was struggling with abdominal and hip injuries, needed to leave the court for treatment early in the final set.

"This is a great chance for me to show how I can play and I love playing here at Wimbledon," said Serena.

"I love being a champion again. I love walking off the court and seeing my name up there again."

Todd Woodbridge equalled a 98-year old record by capturing his eighth men's doubles title at Wimbledon in partnership with Jonas Bjorkman. The defending champions overcame top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi 36 63 76(4) 63 in the final. British brothers Laurie and Reggie Doherty had captured eight men's doubles titles together between 1897 and 1905.

There were more records in the mixed doubles final, where 46-year-old Martina Navratilova equalled Billie Jean Kings's haul of 20 Wimbledon titles by partnering Leander Paes to a 63 63 victory over Andy Ram and Anastasia Rodionova. Navratilova is the oldest ever Grand Slam champion, a record she has held since January when she and Paes won the Australian Open mixed doubles title. The women's doubles title was won by Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama, who repeated the outcome of the Roland Garros final with a 64 64 victory over top seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez.

The full Roll of Honour from Wimbledon 2003 is as follows:
