The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year and is held at Melbourne Park on hard courts. In 2010, it took place from 18-31 January.
The first tournament, then named the Australasian Championships, was staged in 1905 at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne.
Melbourne has now become the Australian Open’s permanent home but this wasn’t the case before 1972, when it was played at numerous locations around the country.
The tournament finally settled at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club before it was decided that a bigger venue was required to meet the ever-increasing crowd demand.
So, in 1988, the purpose-built Flinders Park, now known as Melbourne Park, was opened. The main court, Rod Laver Arena, is named after the great Aussie who became the first player to win the title in the Open era.
Roger Federer and Serena Williams are the reigning singles champions following victories over Andy Murray and Justine Henin in the respective finals in 2010.
