US Open Day 15 - Del Potro seals maiden Grand Slam title
Roger Federer’s hopes of a sixth successive US Open victory were dashed on Monday night as Juan Martin Del Potro came through a titanic five-set battle to win the first Grand Slam title of his career.

Played in front of a packed crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, Del Potro twice came from a set behind to upset the world No.1, eventually winning 36 76 46 76 62 in just over four hours.

Federer got off to the better start and looked to be heading for an unassailable two-sets-to-love lead. However, leading 63 54 and with the balls in his hand, the momentum of the match swung on a Hawk Eye decision that went against the top seed, Del Potro capitalising to break back before going on to clinch the tie-break.

After splitting the next two sets, the enthralling final headed into a decider in which Del Potro dominated throughout. The Argentine broke Federer’s opening service game and never looked back, going on to seal his third title of the year and deny the 15-time Grand Slam champion from rewriting the history books still further.

Before the men’s final got under way, Venus and Serena Williams lifted the women’s doubles trophy, beating No. 1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber 62 62. It was the American sisters’ 10th Grand Slam doubles title together and their second victory at Flushing Meadows.
