01 Jul 2009 - The All England Lawn Tennis Club, London, England
Wimbledon Day 9 - Haas surprise semifinalist
The semifinal line-up for the men's singles of 2009 Wimbledon was decided on a scorching hot Wednesday, with Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Tommy Haas and Andy Murray all advancing into the last four.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was the first to earn his place in Friday's semifinals with an easy 63 75 76 victory over the big-serving No. 22 seed Ivo Karlovic. The Swiss will contest his record 21st consecutive Grand Slam semifinal and this year is attempting to surpass Pete Sampras and win a record 15th major, as well as become only the third man in history to win at least six titles at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Federer will face 31-year-old Tommy Haas in the semifinals, the German having dumped world No. 4 Novak Djokovic out of the tournament with a 75 76 46 63 victory out on Court No. 1. Haas, currently ranked No. 34, came within five points of upsetting Federer in the fourth round at Roland Garros last month, before Federer came back from two sets down and three matches later won his 14th Grand Slam title. This is Haas's first ever Wimbledon semifinal and a perfect reward for a career troubled by injury and misfortune.

Court No. 1 had another thrilling encounter to finish on, with a five-set marathon between 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and No. 6 Andy Roddick, twice a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2004-05. Roddick came through 63 67 76 46 64 in just under four hours, serving 43 aces in the match that topped speeds of 140mph. It was a valiant end to Hewitt's Wimbledon campaign, the former world No. 1 having struggled on the tour since undergoing hip surgery last year.

Great Britain's Andy Murray proved that his five-set fourth round epic on Monday night had not hampered him physically when he earned a succinct 75 63 62 victory over another former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second match on Centre Court. Ferrero, a wildcard at the tournament, served up two double faults at crucial stages in the match, the first to hand Murray the first set, and the second to give the Brit the break back, having been 1-3 down in the second set. Murray will meet Roddick for the ninth time in their career, with Murray on a three-match winning streak against the American.

Elsewhere at The Championships, James Blake/Mardy Fish and Wesley Moodie/Dick Norman won their men's doubles quarterfinal matches, and The Williams sisters, current doubles No. 1s Cara Black and Liezel Huber, 2008 Roland Garros doubles champions Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, and Aussies Sam Stosur and Rennae Stubbs all booked their places in the women's doubles semfinals.
