Wimbledon Day 7 - Murray wins late night epic
Britain’s Andy Murray is into the last eight after a dramatic late-night win over Stanislas Wawrinka as Wimbledon witnessed its first floodlit match under the new roof.

After a rain shower late in the afternoon, the decision was made by the referee for the match to be played with the £100 million roof closed.

The Scot was pushed all the way by Wawrinka in a five set battle that lasted three hours 56 minutes, with the end coming at 2238 BST - the latest ever Wimbledon finish. Murray was outplayed early on, but recovered to eventually close out a 26 63 63 57 63 victory. In the quarterfinal he will play wildcard Juan Carlos Ferrero who upset No. 8 seed Gilles Simon 76 (4) 63 62.

Roger Federer repeated his French Open final triumph over Robin Soderling to reach the last eight, 64 76(5) 76(5). There, he will take on big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic, who hit 35 aces, taking his tournament haul to 137 in four matches so far, who defeated Fernando Verdasco 76(5) 67(4) 63 76(9). Novak Djokovic had a comfortable path to the next stage, cruising past Dudi Sela 62 64 61. He will now face Tommy Haas after the No. 24 seed overcame Russian Igor Andreev also in straight sets.

Lleyton Hewitt produced a remarkable comeback against Radek Stepanek, showing all his trademark fighting spirit to secure victory 46 26 61 62 62. His reward is a clash against Andy Roddick, who proved too good for Tomas Berdych 76 (4) 64 63.

In the women’s draw, no. 1 Dinara Safina came through a thrilling encounter with Amelie Mauresmo, in a match which made Wimbledon history as the first to take place under the Centre Court roof. Safina recovered from 0-3 in the final set to win 46 63 64 and book her place in the quarterfinals. However, of almost equal drama was the sight of the new roof being closed and used for the first time after rain began to fall during the second set, drawing huge cheers from the spectators.

Venus and Serena Williams continue to march through, easing into the next stage with triumphs over Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova respectively. Defending champion Venus was leading 61 1-0 when Ivanovic retired with a thigh problem and Serena was dominant form against Hantuchova, easily defeating her 63 61 in just 56 minutes.

The surprises of the day were Germany’s Sabine Lisicki knocking out no. 9 seed Caroline Wozniacki 64 64 and Francesca Schiavone battling past No. 26 seed Virginie Razzano 62 76(1).

Other women taking up the rest of the last eight spots are Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka and Elena Dementieva.
