Former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt gave his best performance in years with a breathtaking 63 75 75 victory over no. 5 seed Juan Martin Del Potro.
The 2002 winner outfought and outplayed the Argentine and looked back to his finest form after long term hip injury. He will now face Philipp Petzschner in the 3rd round. Britain’s Andy Murray was also right on top of this game against Ernests Gulbis, enthralling the home crowd with a polished display, triumphing 62 75 63 in one hour and 28 minutes. Other players progressing include Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, Nikolay Davydenko, David Ferrer and Radek Stepanek.
In the women’s draw, Venus Williams cruised through her match, easily overcoming Kateryna Bondarenko 63 62. Top seed Dinara Safina, bidding for a maiden Grand Slam title after defeats in the final of the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year, is into the next round, defeating Rossana De Los Rios 63 75. Former world No. 1’s Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic also booked their places in the next stage after straight sets victories. Also joining them are Svetlana Kuznetsova, Caroline Wozniacki, Amelie Mauresmo, Sam Stosur, Flavia Pennetta and Na Li.
