| Wimbledon Day 2 - Williams eases through |
Defending champion Venus Williams eased into the second round at Wimbledon with a 63 62 victory over Swiss teenager Stefanie Voegele at a sun-drenched Wimbledon.
The No. 3 seed, who is going for a sixth singles title at the All England Club, was given a harder workout than the score line suggests, overcoming her opponent in one hour and 18 minutes. No. 13 seed Ana Ivanovic had to save two match points and narrowly avoided a first round defeat here for a second year in a row, as she scraped past Czech Lucie Hradecka 57 62 86. Top seed Dinara Safina got her campaign underway with a 75 63 win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.
Other players through include Svetlana Kuznetsova, Amelie Mauresmo, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic, Samantha Stosur and Li Na.
In the men’s draw, Britain’s No. 1 Andy Murray was given a serious work out by American Robby Kendrick, eventually making it into the second round 75 67(3) 63 64. No. 6 seed Andy Roddick also dropped a set in overcoming Jeremy Chardy, but No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro had no problems in defeating France's Arnaud Clement 63 61 62 and will next face former champion Lleyton Hewitt.
Other seeds successfully making it into round two are Fernando Gonzalez, Tommy Haas, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek and Dmitry Tursunov.
