| Wimbledon Day 1 - Easy start for Federer |
Roger Federer’s bid for a sixth Wimbledon title got off to a comfortable start with a straight-sets win over Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei.
The 14-time Grand Slam winner opened proceedings on Centre Court and despite a slightly shaky start and dropping serve early on, posted a comfortable 75 63 62 victory in one hour 44 minutes. No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic had a tougher time of things, coming from a set down to defeat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 67(8) 76(1) 62 64. Italian Andreas Seppi produced the first shock of the tournament by overcoming No. 17 seed and Queen’s finalist James Blake 75 64 76.
The first day also saw victories for seeds Fernando Verdasco, Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Robin Soderling and Marin Cilic.
In the women’s draw, no. 2 seed Serena Williams only needed one hour 13 minutes to breeze past Portuguese qualifier Neuza Silva 61 75. 2004 champion Maria Sharapova started slowly in her opening encounter against Ukranian Viktoriya Kutuzova, but eventually found her form to secure the match 75 64. Others through to the next stage include Victoria Azarenka, Nadia Petrova, Jie Zheng and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
