| Roland Garros Day 1 - Ivanovic campaign underway |
Defending champion Ana Ivanovic got her 2009 Roland Garros campaign successfully underway on Philippe Chatrier court on Sunday by defeating Italian Sara Errani 76 63 on the first day of action in Paris. But it was a sad day for French fans with both Amelie Mauresmo and Emilie Loit bowing out early in the competition.
No. 18 seed Mauresmo fell in straight sets to former junior Roland Garros champion Anna-Lena Groenefeld as dusk settled on Paris, while a loss to Timea Bacsinszky was too much to bear for 29-year-old Loit, who after shedding tears on Court 2, announced her retirement from professional tennis.
In the men’s draw, No. 26 seed Ivo Karlovic was the one seeded casualty, despite setting a new record for number of aces in one match. The Croat served a whopping 55 aces during his five-set battle with Lleyton Hewitt on Court 1, breaking his own record of 51, but in the end went down 67 67 76 64 63.
French No. 7 Gilles Simon also had to endure five sets against American Wayne Odesnik, and joins new world No. 3 Andy Murray, No. 8 Fernando Verdasco and No. 20 Marat Safin, amongst others, into the second round.
Day 2 sees Roland Garros king Rafael Nadal in action, alongside Roger Federer, women’s world No. 1 Dinara Safina and Maria Sharapova, who makes her first Grand Slam appearance since 2008 Wimbledon after recovering from shoulder surgery.
