Australian Open day 11: Safina v Williams final
Serena Williams is into her 13th Grand Slam final after defeating Elena Dementieva 63 64 in their semifinal today. The American, looking for her tenth major title proved both too powerful and consistent for the fourth seed, who didn’t help her cause by making 28 unforced errors and double-faulting twice to hand Williams a crucial second-set break.

Williams will now face Dinara Safina who battled past fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 63 76(4). She will now hope to collect her first Grand Slam in Saturday's showdown, when the world No. 1 ranking will also be at stake.

Safina commented about the prospect, "I remember watching my brother on TV winning this tournament, and if I still watched it today I would have tears in my eyes. It's great that I can follow in his footsteps. He was my idol - he still is my idol - and the fact that I'm doing as well as him is amazing."

Roger Federer is closing in on history after proving far too good for Andy Roddick to reach the final. The Swiss legend hit 11 forehand winners in the opening set as he broke the American’s big service twice. Federer is now just one win away from equalling Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam singles titles after his 62 75 75 victory.

The women’s doubles final will feature the Williams sisters playing No. 9 seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama with the Americans looking to win the title for the third time, having triumphed in 2001 and 2003.
