| Australian Open Day 8: Murray knocked out |
Andy Murray's title bid is over after being defeated by Fernando Verdasco in five sets.
The Spaniard, ranked 15 in the world, proved too consistent for the pre-tournament favourite, who never found the form he has been showing in 2009. Although the Scot twice led by a set, Ferdasco fought back each time for a 26 61 16 63 64 victory.
2008 runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga again showed his liking for the Melbourne surface, producing a dominant display to dispatch No.9 seed James Blake 64 64 76(3).
World No.1 Rafael Nadal was again in top form brushing aside Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets 63 62 64. Nadal will next take on France's Gilles Simon, who will be competing in his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final, after injury forced Gael Monfils to retire in their match.
There was also a retiree in the women’s draw with Victoria Azarenka having to stop because of illness in her game against Serena Williams. The Belarusian has taken the first set 63, but looked increasingly unsteady on her feet as the heat took its toll.
Jie Zheng also had to retire in her match against Svetlana Kuznetsova with a problematic left wrist when trailing the Russian 4-1 in the first set.
No 4. seed Elena Dementieva also had an easier day then expected, comfortably getting the better of Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 62 62.
