| Australian Open Day 7: Bartoli humbles Jankovic |
Top seed and world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic has been knocked out of the Australian Open by Marion Bartoli in straight sets 61 64.
The French 16th seed completely outplayed the Serb, snatching the first five games of the match to leave Jankovic a mountain to climb, which she could never come back from. In the quarterfinal, Bartoli will now play Vera Zvonareva, who get the better of countrywomen Nadia Petrova 75 64.
Third seed Dinara Safina saved two match points, battling past France’s Alize Cornet 62 26 75. The Russian hit an extraordinary 52 unforced errors, but managed to stage a remarkable comeback to come from 5-2 down in the final set.
Next up for Safina is unseeded Australian Jelena Dokic, who thrilled the home crowd with a courageous 75 57 86 win over Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova.
Roger Federer had a scare in his match today against Thomas Berdych, coming from two sets down to reach the quarterfinals 46 67(4) 64 64 62. The Swiss legend will now take on Argentine Juan Martin del Potro who was too good for Croatian Marin Cilic, the result 57 64 64 62.
Andy Roddick continued his good form, overwhelming Tommy Robredo 75 61 63. His quarterfinal opponent will be reigning champion Novak Djokovic who defeated Marcos Baghadatis 61 76 (1) 67 62 in a match that finished at 0230.
