| Australian Open Day 4: Venus crashes out |
No. 6 seed Venus Williams suffered a major upset in the second round today, defeated by unseeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.
Suarez Navarro, 20, playing in only her fourth Grand Slam, saved a match point before overcoming Williams 26 63 75 in a match that lasted two-and-a-quarter hours. She will next face fellow Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
The day was better for sister Serena, who completed a 63 75 victory over Argentine Gisela Dulko, which sets up a match against Shuai Peng of China in the third round.
Also through are Svetlana Kuznetsova, Patty Schnyder, Victoria Azarenka and Amelie Mauresmo.
Rafael Nadal continued his impressive form, completing another straight-sets victory over Roko Karanusic and will now meet Tommy Haas. Andy Murray was also untroubled by Marcel Granollers to line up a last-32 meeting with 31st seed Jurgen Melzer.
Last years finalist Jo Wilfried Tsonga's advancement to round three was anything but as straight-forward, battling through a 67(4) 76(8) 76(7) 62 examination from Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.
There were also victories today for fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils as well as Fernando Verdasco, Radek Stepanek and Mario Ancic.
