| Australian Open Day 2: Williams’s storm through |
Venus and Serena both won in straight sets to get their respective campaigns off to a solid start in Melbourne.
Three-time champion Serena easily defeated Meng Yuan of China 63 61 and then No. 6 seed Venus saw off Germany's Angelique Kerber 63 63 without too much trouble. The sisters could meet in the semifinals if they continue to progress.
There were no real other surprises in the rest women’s draw, aside from Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko getting the better of ninth seed Agnieska Radwanska 67 (7) 64 16.
Pre-tournament joint favourite Andy Murray’s opening-round clash against Andrei Pavel lasted only 45 minutes, before the Romanian retired hurt and then after the match announced his retirement from tennis altogether.
Top seed Rafael Nadal made his intentions known to the rest of the field, racing to a 60 62 62 crushing victory over Belgian Christophe Rochus. It was a good day for France as all their seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet progressed to the next round. Things weren’t as good for the home nation though, as crowd favourite Lleyton Hewitt lost out to Fernando Gonzalez in five sets.
