| Murray sends Federer crashing out |
Andy Murray’s victory over Roger Federer sent the former world No. 1 crashing out of the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai today.
It took the Briton eight match points to seal the Swiss player’s fate; his earliest ever exit in the competition, in a match which lasted over three hours and finished 46 76(3) 75.
"I'm going to be a bit tired tomorrow but a win over Roger Federer means almost as much as winning the Masters Cup to me - to win against him and have a record like I do is awesome. I know I'm going to be tired but this means a lot to me," said Murray. This result ensured that Gilles Simon, who overcame Radek Stepanek 61 64 earlier in the day, claimed the remaining semifinal spot and will play Novak Djokovic for a place in the final tomorrow. Murray faces Nikolay Davydenko in the other semifinal.
Three-time Davis Cup winner and multiple Grand Slam champion Jonas Bjorkman played the final match of his 17-year career in Shanghai on Friday.
A narrow defeat for the 36-year-old Swede and Kevin Ullyett to Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the final match of the round-robin stage of the Tennis Masters Cup meant that Bjorkman and Ullyett failed to advance to the semifinals and the veteran, who had said that he was going to retire at the end of this season, had played his last competitive match.
