Sports Science and Medicine Commission
The Medical Commission was established in 1985:
> The Sport Science & Medicine Commission is an authority on tennis-specific sports science and sports medicine. It accomplishes this by a variety of means, including the effective dissemination of information, which it will achieve primarily through its new web site, but also other sources such as publications, presentations at conferences and original research.

Technical Commission
The Commission includes representatives from the Men's and Women's Professional Tours, and has responsibility for protecting the nature of the game by monitoring developments in the equipment manufacture and ensures that the technical specifications are adhered to.
The ITF seeks to keep a balance between the preservation of the challenge and skills traditionally required to play the game, while encouraging innovation in product development designed to make tennis more exciting to play and watch.

To this end, the Commission:
> Maintains close contact with equipment and facility manufacturers, academic institutes with expertise in sports technology, and other parties with interests in the future of the game so that the Rules of Tennis (as they relate to equipment) are administered on the basis of the best and most updated information;
> Racket technology: The Commission determines how far modern technology will allow rackets to develop and to predict how this might affect the way tennis is played, both at the professional level and for the millions of players who play tennis for recreation rather than for reward;
> Tennis ball technology: The Commission studies the way in which the ball interacts with the different types of court surface on which tennis is played worldwide. Balls supplied by all major international manufacturers are regularly tested to ensure that standards are maintained..
