Robson gives home fans a boost

For the last few years British fans at Wimbledon have usually had to pin their hopes on a certain Scottish man from Dunblane.

Laura Robson, the 19-year-old who shot to fame when she won Junior Wimbledon five years ago, put on a scintillating display of big hitting tennis to defeat No. 10 seed Maria Kirilenko and gave the home fans real hope that she might be able to do some damage on the lawns of the All England Club.

The Brit will be rewarded for her 63 64 win over Kirilenko with a second round encounter against Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque-Marino, who ousted Germany’s Julia Goerges 64 67(3) 75 on Tuesday.

The one name that looms large at the top of the women’s draw is that of Serena Williams and the world No. 1 looked in ominously good form against Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella on Centre Court as she came through 61 63.

The 31-year-old five-time Wimbledon winner will play up-and-coming Caroline Garcia from France in the second round on Thursday.

At the other end of the age spectrum, 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm proved she has still got what it takes to perform at the highest level with a 60 62 win against Carina Witthoeft.

There were also routine victories for three of the big names in the top half of the draw as No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Yvonne Meusberger 61 61, No. 6 Li Na eased through by the same scoreline against Michaella Krajicek and No. 7 Angelique Kerber looked in good form as she defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 63 64.

In the men’s draw on Tuesday, Novak Djokovic looked every inch the favourite to win the title with a 63 75 64 victory over what could have been a tricky opening round encounter against Florian Mayer.

David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro all booked their places in the second round, where they will be joined by Bernard Tomic – who pulled off a good win against No. 21 seed Sam Querrey – and Felicano Lopez – who knocked out No. 19 Gilles Simon.

Tommy Haas, Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori and Grigor Dimitrov also progressed without any serious hiccoughs.
