Czech Republic have announced the formidable pairing of Tomas Berdych and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will join forces to compete at the 2012 Hyundai Hopman Cup.
The Czech duo is sure to be a contender at the ITF’s mixed team event, which is due to start on 31 December at the Burswood Dome in Perth, Australia.
“With two top ten players going into the prime of their tennis careers this team will be setting the bar high for the other teams,” said tournament director Paul McNamee.
“We are delighted to welcome the reigning Wimbledon champion. Kvitova has the world at her feet, and it is a real boost for the tournament that she is starting her 2012 campaign in Perth.”
Kvitova, who shot to fame with her powerful hitting en route to the 2011 Wimbledon title earlier this summer, is no stranger to team competitions having steered her country to the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final to be held in Moscow on 5-6 November.
But the 21-year-old will be making her Hopman Cup debut and will turn to her partner to draw on some of his experience of the event.
Berdych has played Hopman Cup twice before, winning two of his three singles rubbers in both 2007 and 2008, but alongside partner Lucie Safarova he was never able to reach the final.
The Czech pair will be hoping to go one better and emulate the victorious team of Jana Novotna and Petr Korda, who won the competition in 1994.
