El Salvador's victorious under 14 boys' team

El Salvador’s under 14 boys’ team starred at the World Junior Tennis North/Central American and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event in Guatemala City on 12-17 March, going undefeated all week to earn a place in next month’s final qualifying event in Mexico.

With just one team at the Guatemala event earning a place in the final qualifying event in Mexico City on 26-28 April, the top seeds produced a dominant display to come out on top ahead of 13 other nations by winning all five of their ties last week.

The El Salvador team – featuring Diego Duran, Alejandro Licea and Enrique Laennec – recorded 3-0 victories over Barbados, Aruba, Honduras and Puerto Rico.

Their only slight slip came in the semifinals against Costa Rica, when Laennec and Licea won the tie 64 46 10-4 in a deciding doubles after Luca Lo Nardo had defeated Licea in straight sets in the second rubber, but they were back on form in the final – putting the Puerto Ricans to the sword.

The girls’ pre-qualifying event follows at the same venue this week on 19-24 March, with one team progressing to the Final Qualifying event in Mexico.

The ultimate prize is a place in the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic on 6-11 August, when 16 nations will battle it out in each of the boys’ and girls’ events for the chance to become the under 14 world champions.
