BURNIE, AUSTRALIA: Last weekend saw the 2018 Australian Open sensation, 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk, victorious over Viktorija Golubic in the singles final of the $60,000 Tasmanian tournament in Burnie.

This was only the Ukrainian teenager’s second tournament on the ITF Pro Circuit at this prize money level – having also competed in Hungary during June 2017 – and had made use of the Junior Exempt Program to gain entry.

Twice during the course of the week, Kostyuk had to fight back from a set down to stay in the tournament including in her semifinal defeat of Zoe Hives.

In making the final, Kostyuk was appearing in a singles final on the ITF Pro Circuit for the second time in her young career and an impressive straight sets 64 63 win over the Swiss top seed brought her a second title having also triumphed in May 2017 on the clay courts at the $25,000 Dunakeszi tournament in Hungary.

"I didn’t really expect that I could really win this match because she was playing really good."

An added bonus to claiming her second career title, and first on a hard court, Kostyuk also climbed the WTA ranking ladder to a new career high of 185 and is now preparing to make her Fed Cup debut as she leads her nation out against Australia this weekend in Canberra.

Looking ahead to her nation’s away fixture, Kostyuk theorised: "I’m expecting there will not be a lot of Ukrainians" although this would not be a hindrance to her adding, "Honestly, I really love to play when the crowd is against me."
