Biglmaier and Hoarau claim title in Royan

News Article

Royan, $10,000 - Mathilde Hoarau (FRA) and Maraike Biglmaier (GER)

Maraike Biglmaier and Mathilde Hoarau won their first title together at Open International de Royan on 11-13 August, while Tommaso Giovannini and Antomi Ramos-Viera won the men's doubles title.

The tournament, which is a regular feature on the tour, was the next stop for many of those who had competed in the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships in Cervia.

The 2016 women’s winners in Royan, Flaminia Daina and Patricia Diaz, however, were not present to defend their title, leaving the door open for the rest of the field to claim victory at the event.

Seventh seeds Veronica Casadei and Nicole Nobile knocked out top seeds and 2016 finalists Eva D’Elia and Visani were knocked out in the quarterfinals. After both battling through difficult semifinals, Biglmaier and Hoarau eventually ground out a 61 75 victory in the final, to claim the title and a share of the $10,000 prize money on offer.

In the men’s event, both Ramos-Viera and Michele Cappelletti reached the final, as they had in 2016, but with different partners - and this time, Ramos-Viera got the better of the world No. 1, producing a stellar display alongside Giovannini to defeat Cappelletti and Luca Cramarossa 64 62 to secure victory.
