Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Venezuela through to Finals

Peru ITF World Junior Tennis team

Argentina, Brazil and Peru’s boys’ teams lived up to their billing as the top three seeds by winning a place into the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov on 7-12 August at last week’s South American qualifying event in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

But while the top three seeds at the event all qualified for the Czech Republic event as predicted, there was a surprise in the semi-final as third-seeded Argentina pipped top seeds Peru to round robin group victory after winning the final on the decisive doubles rubber courtesy of Maximo Lucentini and Tomas Moretto.

Brazil topped their group to face Argentina in the final, where they clinched the deciding doubles rubber 10-5 to take first place.  Top seeds Peru defeated Ecuador to take 3rd place and with it a place at the Finals.

With just two qualification places up for grabs into the girls’ event, Brazil’s girls’ team missed out on a place in Prostejov after finishing third overall.

Peru and Venezuela assured themselves qualification into the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, with the latter ultimately winning the event courtesy of two singles victories for Dana Guzman and Camila Soares.

Both Peru and Venezuela will look to become the first South American nation to win the ITF World Junior Tennis girls’ title when they head to Prostejov in August.

Argentina was the last South American nation to win the boys' title at the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, in 2016.
