Guatemala Junior Fed Cup team
The top seeds emerged victorious in both the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup pre-qualifying tournaments in El Salvador on 27 March - 1 April.
The opening rubber of the final round of the Junior Davis Cup saw Felipe Cruz of Costa Rica take on Alejandro Solares of Guatemala, with Cruz sealing a straight sets victory in a remarkable two hours 30 minutes.
In the second rubber, Sebastian Dominguez of Guatemala was in exceptional form against Costa Rica's Rodrigo Crespo, defeating the battling Crespo 62 76(4) to level the tie for Guatemala. The deciding doubles rubber went right down to the wire, with Guatemala's Dominguez and Solares eventually defeating Crespo and Anxell Delago 62 67 11-9.
In the Junior Fed Cup final round, top seeds Guatemala played second seeds Puerto Rico. Maria Gabriela Rivera got the top seeds off to the perfect start when she defeated Amanda Rivera 61 60, and, when Rut Galindo won the first set of her rubber against Daniela Latoni 6-1, it appeared as though Guatemala would ease to victory.
Latoni, however, would have something to say about that. She showed excellent fighting spirit to take the second set 6-3 before taking the deciding set 6-2 to level the tie at 1-1.
Guatemala's two singles players teamed up for the decisive doubles, while Puerto Rico brought in Ariana Salgueiro to play with Latoni. It was the Guatemalans who triumphed, taking the rubber 64 60.
By virtue of their performances last week, Guatemala earned a spot in the Junior Fed Cup and the Junior Davis Cup North/Central American & Caribbean Final Qualifying event in Campeche, Mexico on 27-29 April, with the ultimate goal being a place in the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas/Junior Fed Cup Finals on 18-23 September.
