COQUIMBO, CHILE: The 2013 season on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour got underway in South America with a Grade 4 tournament over the period of 18-20 January.
The women's doubles final saw a team from Venezuela take on the home favourites from Chile. Francisca Etcheverria and Francisca Zuniga, both ranked within the ITF's Top 100, received a Bye into round two. They then lost just one game from two matches as they stormed into the final.
Facing the Chilean pair in the final was Maria Carolina Ceballos and Patricia Diaz, an unseeded pair from Venezuela. Their route to the final saw them first see off an all-Argentine pairing in round one before then eliminating the second and third seeds in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively. All three rounds were won in straight sets.
In a close final the Venezuelans fell behind to the number one seeds but hit back to secure a tight 57 63 64 win. Having defeated the top three seeded teams in successive rounds with the loss of just one set, no-one can argue that the title win for Ceballos and Diaz wasn't well deserved.
In an all-Chilean men's doubles final the top-seeded pairing of Eric Alvarez and Marcello Guzman claimed the title with a 63 63 defeat of the third seeds Sebastian Muniz and Sebastian Munoz.
Both teams reached the final following a series of impressive straight sets victories. Like their top-seeded female counterparts, Alvarez and Guzman benefitted from a first round Bye, they then posted successive wins of 62 60 to take their place in the final. No first round Bye for Muniz and Munoz though and their route to the final saw them record wins of 60 61, 60 60 and 63 62.
