The APIA Sydney International Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, gets underway on Friday, with many of world’s top men’s and women’s players lining up for the first Super Series event of 2013.
2012 ITF World Champion Stephane Houdet of France and four-time ITF World Champion Shingo Kunieda of Japan, the world’s current top two ranked players, both have first round byes in the men’s singles, while the pick of the first round matches include Austrian Martin Legner’s contest against form top ranked Australian Mick Connell, while Argentina’s world No. 5 Gustavo Fernandez takes on Australia’s Ben Weekes.
While world No. 2 Aniek van Koot heads the women’s singles entry and the contingent of four top ranked Dutchwomen competing in Sydney, the two matches that will be played to complete the quarterfinal line-up include a mouth watering contest between world No. 6 Sharon Walraven of the Netherlands and world No. 7 Lucy Shuker of Great Britain.
Meanwhile, Dutch world No. 5 Marjolein Buis and world No. 10 Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa have both been awarded byes through to the last eight, where will meet each other.
