Development Fund project concludes in Lithuania

News Article

The final visit of the Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund took place in Lithuania last week, conducted by ITF expert Martyn Whait (GBR)  and player ambassador Florian de Boer (NED).

Martyn had an eventful journey to Lithuania, after being stranded on a connecting flight following snow in Frankfurt, and ended up travelling for over 30 hours. Florian was left to run the first day's activities which involved a players clinic that also involved neighbouring Belarus in the morning and afternoon.

Martyn then joined in activities from the second day after finally arriving into Lithuania. The largest rehabilitation centre in Lithuania, Druskininkai, was visited which was the first time that activity had occurred outside of Vilnius. New players were given an introduction to the sport and the opportunity to take part in a session at the rehabilitation centre.

Further player clinics were done on day three with an on-court press conference. Players were given the opportunity to benefit from Martyn's technical and tactical expertise. The final day involved visiting Klaipeda and the proposed new site of tennis courts, and a presentation was made to the group there to try and grow the programme outside of the capital Vilnius.
