ITF renames wheelchair tennis fund

Clinic in Tanzania

Ten years ago the ITF, in partnership with the Cruyff Foundation, introduced the Wheelchair Tennis Silver Fund to celebrate the 25th anniversary of wheelchair tennis.

At the 2012 Invacare Doubles Masters this fund was renamed the Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund (WTDF).

Through the WTDF the ITF works with specific countries over a two-year period, sending out different ITF experts and player ambassadors to these countries and providing equipment for their respective programmes.

The ITF representatives hold clinics, meet with local partners, set up development plans and talk to the media. The aim for the end of the two-year period is to have established self-sustainable programmes, with opportunities in place for players to take part in international competition.

With the valuable support of the Cruyff Foundation the fund has thrived over the past ten years, with 35 projects initiated by 2012, all aimed at establishing self-sustainable wheelchair tennis projects in countries that are otherwise not able to embrace the sport. The fund is responsible for its own fundraising and resources are spent solely on development projects in developing countries globally.
