HERMOSA BEACH, CA, USA: Italians Alessandro Calbucci and Nicola Gambi took the title at this G1 event with victory over the Brazilian pairing of Vinicius Font and Guilherme Prata.
The Brazilians, the only non-Italians to have made it beyond the quarterfinals, were the second team from the South American nation that Calbucci and Gambi had faced having previously eliminated Marcus Ferreira and Thales Santos at the quarterfinal stage.
Calbucci and Gambi nearly didn’t make it to the final when fellow countrymen Michele Folegatti and Luca Meliconi moved ahead in their semifinal encounter before fighting back to level and then edge a match tiebreak decider 10-8.
For Font and Prata, their path to the final saw them ease through the opening two rounds to set up a semifinal with the top 10 ranked Italians Luca Cramarossa and Paolo Tronci. The two Brazilians, ranked just outside the top 10, dropped just two games in the opening set but their Italian opponents drew level with a narrow 64 second set win to force a deciding match tiebreak.
The Brazilians then secured their place in the final with a 10-3 triumph in the tiebreak.
Taking the title though was to prove a step to far as the Italians, led by the current world number one, Calbucci, conceded five games in a 63 62 win. The points earned here should see Gambi improve on his present ranking of 138.
There was Brazilian success though in the women’s event as world number 25 Flavia Muniz teamed up with Aruba’s Maria Buuts, herself ranked inside the top 50 at 44, to take the women's doubles title.
Following a first round Bye they eased past the Italian-American duo of Annalisa Prati and Jamie Suard with the loss of just two games before recording a big win over the top 10 ranked Nadia Johnston and Nicole Melch with a 63 64 scoreline.
They then claimed the title with a 63 63 win over Frenchwomen Ludivine Bodar and Fanny Rollet. This was their first title together although both had won a title with other partners this year.
