Stephen Welch reached his eighth men’s singles final of 2012 and his third in Canada on the penultimate day of the Tennis Canada International, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as he and Steve Baldwin set up an all-American final after semifinal victories over Canadian players in Montreal.

Top seed Welch dominated the first set of his match against third seed Philippe Bedard and then narrowly avoided being taken to a deciding set when he closed out a 61 76(5) victory.

In the other semifinal Baldwin also lived up to his second seeding when he defeated Eric Gilbert 64 63.

Midway through last month Welch edged Baldwin in a final set tiebreak in their semifinal at the PTR Championships, suggesting that Sunday’s final in Montreal could be a tight contest.

Yuka Chokyu remains in pole position in the women’s singles after securing her third 60 60 victory of the round-robin event. Chokyu, one of the most experienced women’s players on the NEC Tour, has beaten Kirsten Sharp, Jeanine McDonald, and Mika Ishikawa without dropping a game and now faces one last match against Amanda Yan, whose only loss in her three matches so far has come against Ishikawa.
