G4 - Aruba - September 2012

ORANJESTAD, ARUBA: Over the weekend of 29-30 September 2012 more than 200 beach tennis players arrived in the city of Oranjestad on the island of Aruba, where, despite being faced with strong winds and brutal sun, Eagle Beach was packed with hundreds of spectators and players enjoying the scenery and action across 12 courts.

The weekend featured many events, the highlight of which was a G4 tournament on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, the second such tournament to be held in Oranjestad in 2012.

The previous tournament, in August, saw Randolph Arends and Jochem Ros claim the men’s titles with the women’s event being won by Yvette Franssen and Danielle Van Staveren. Only Arends returned for this month’s tournament but he made an early exit to the eventual champions from Venezuela Ramon Guedez and Alejandro Quijada, one of three pairs of Venezuelans to feature in the draw.

The women’s final also saw two Venezuelans in action, this time on opposing sides as Andrea Perreira teamed up with Aruba’s Maria Buuts with Virginia Melendez playing alongside Cuban Yami Romay. The locals gathered to watch as the Aruba-Venezuela partnership triumphed to take the title.

Beach tennis action returns to Oranjestad in late October over the weekend of 27-28 for a third G4 tournament in as many months, then, in November, it’s the big one, as a G1 tournament will be taking place on Eagle Beach.

2011 champs and current top 10 ranked players, Italians Matteo Marighella and Luca Meliconi and Nadia Johnston and Nicole Melch from America, will, hopefully, be back to defend their titles in an event sure to attract the games top players from around the globe.

You can catch all the action and excitement of this high level tournament over 16-18 November. Information can be found here and also on Aruba Beach Tennis website.
