Seeds make Wroclaw Cup progress

All eight seeds have comfortably reached the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Wroclaw Cup, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, while the women’s singles semifinal line-up was also completed on Wednesday’s second day of play in Poland.

Top seed Tom Egberink needed less than 30 minutes to win his opening match of the week against Poland’s Pawel Mietrkiewicz 60 60, while second seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki also won his first match against his fellow Pole Mariusz Smietanka without dropping a game.

Aside from Egberink, the other quarterfinalists in the top half of the draw, fourth seed Steffen Sommerfeld of Germany, fifth seed Kamil Fabisiak of Poland and eighth seed Dan Kleckner of Austria all progress for the loss of just one game, with Fabisiak set to face Egberink next, while Sommerfeld plays Kleckner.

Third seed Piotr Jaroszewski and seventh seed Albin Batycki won their matches 61 61 and 63 63 respectively and will meet in the last eight, guaranteeing that Polish fans will have at least one representative in the semifinals.

Sixth seed Mirolsav Brychta will represent the Czech Republic in the last eight after beating his countryman Jan Hasek 63 60 to earn a match against Kruszelnicki, a player

The start of the women’s singles saw Lucyna Mietrkiewicz edge out her countrywoman Katarzyna Wojcieszak 64 75 to set up a semifinal against British top seed Louise Hunt, with Judyta Olszewska adding to the Polish success after she beat Willemien Smits 60 63. Olszewska will face another Dutch opponent in the semifinals when the plays second seed Dorrie Timmermans-van Hall.
