Match Report

Mariusz Smietanka (POL)

Two of the five all-Polish men’s singles matches provided the headlines on Tuesday’s opening day of the Wroclaw Cup, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, while the Czech Republic’s Jan Hasek and Russia’s Yuriy Golovin  also booked their places in the second round to meet one of the eight seeded players.

Mariusz Smietanka and Radoslaw Rudszki, both currently unranked, contested one of the day’s two three set matches, with Smietanka coming from a set down to prevail 46 62 62 to earn a contest against second seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki in what will be one of three all-Polish second round matches.

Maksymilian Szary also won in a deciding set, defeating fellow Pole Arkaduisz Stasiak 61 46 64 to book his place in the last 16 against Austrian eighth seed Dan Kleckner.

Pawel Mietrkiewicz, Jaroslaw Zyla, Krzysztof Brezyna and Jerzy Kulik were the other home nation players to advance in straight sets, while Hasek edged out Poland’s Adam Kinowski 76(5) 64 to ensure that there will be a Czech player in the quarterfinals later in the week as Hasek now faces sixth seed Miroslav Brychta.

Golovin claimed a 61 61 win over Przemyslaw Hebisz and the Russian player will play Polish seventh seed Albin Batycki next.

Wednesday’s second day of play at the ITF 2 Series tournament will see Dutch top seed Tom Egberink begin his campaign against Mietrkiewicz, while the women’s singles will also get underway.
