Getting wind of Windahl

For 16-year-old Daniel Windahl of Sweden playing tennis is all about following in the footsteps of his father.

The Swede was a key element in securing a 3-0 win over China on Tuesday, the opening day of the Junior Davis Cup Finals. Sweden’s win means that they will play Egypt, who lost 0-3 to Italy on Tuesday, in round-robin action in Group D on Wednesday.

Windahl, playing second on the team behind Elias Ymer, won his singles match 64 63 against Zhong Su-Hao and teamed with Philip Moebius to win the doubles point 60 62 over Zhou Xhe and Zhong.

“Every player played as good as they can today,” said Windahl, playing for the first time in this prestigious junior title.

Windahl’s father, Jorgen, 49, was a talented junior player who spent some time on the pro tour. In fact, the elder Windahl captured the 1981 Australian Open junior boys’ title, spoiling the hopes of the home crowd by beating Aussie Pat Cash in the final. Windahl was the first Swede to win the Australian junior crown in the same year that Mats Wilander went on to win the French Open junior boys’ title.

In the pros, Windahl’s dads’ best result was reaching the Madrid semifinals in singles and winning the 1986 Geneva doubles title. Jorgen Windahl’s best career singles ranking was No. 69.

The younger Windahl relishes coming from a country able to boast a past peppered with former tennis greats -- Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, to name a few -- has inspired him as he plays the juniors. In fact, he’s even had personal attention from some of the stars he’s admired.

“I’ve trained with some of them a couple of times,” said Windahl, who currently holds a combined ITF junior ranking  of 132. “I’ve trained with Stefan Edberg and Magnus Norman.”

Of hitting with Edberg, Windahl said, “It was tough. He’s like not missing no balls and putting everything in the court.”

For Windahl, the goal is to play at the Grand Slams as a pro and “maybe get a bit further.” To borrow a familiar phrase, it sounds like Windahl’s a chip off the old block.
