Arnau Brugues (ESP) and Brydan Klein (AUS), Antalya, Turkey 2012
Spanish 27-year-old Arnau Brugues has set a new record in ITF Pro Circuit action for most consecutive singles main draw victories.
With victory in the final of the Turkey F17 tournament held in Antalya-Belconti during May 2012 saw him move onto 40 match wins, surpassing Eduardo Schwank’s record of 39 wins which had proudly stood for almost five years!
When I asked how it felt to have set this ITF Pro Circuit record Brugues responded: “It feels great, having a record means that I did something that nobody has done before so I am very happy for that. Winning all these Futures helped me get to my highest ranking and I got the chance to play bigger tournaments so I am very happy for that.”
Brugues further increased his winning streak to 44 at the same venue the following week as he raced through to another ITF Pro Circuit singles final, the 20th of his career, but saw this incredible run of victories brought to an end with a straight sets loss to German teenager Robin Kern, a player competing in his first ITF Pro Circuit singles final.
As the victories began to mount up, did the Spaniard’s thoughts ever dwell on this record? “Honestly I wasn’t thinking about the record until I had 35 wins in a row. After wining my seventh Futures in a row I read the article on the ITF website saying that I was five wins away, and after that I had it in my mind all along.”
Following that 35th victory, which came in Palma Del Rio, Spain, Brugues stepped up to the Challenger Circuit but his thoughts still dwelled on that record. “I started playing bigger tournaments but I had in my mind the record. I thought that playing in Turkey was a good opportunity to break the record, and I am really happy that I made that decision!”
All 44 of his match wins came on outdoor hard courts beginning in Oklahoma, USA and ending, as mentioned, in Antalya-Belconti, Turkey. During this run the Spaniard claimed eight singles titles and recorded an impressive 88-12 set win-loss record leading into his final defeat. That final aside, Brugues only found himself down a set on four occasions!
