Cuba secure their place at the North/Central America & Caribbean Final Qualifying event
The Dominican Republic boys’ team and Cuba girls’ team won the North America & Caribbean pre-qualifying event of the Junior Davis & Fed Cup by BNP Paribas. Dominican Republic secured their place in the Final Qualifying event after the two singles rubbers against Costa Rica, with Manuel Castellanos (DOM) defeating Julian Saborio (CRC) in the first singles and Juan Bisono (DOM) beating Daniel Gutierrez (CRC) in the second singles. The girls' event went right down to the wire, with Costa Rica falling at the last hurdle for the second time in Santo Domingo. Ariana Rahmanparast gave Costa Rica an early lead defeating Yenise Macahado (CUB) in straight sets, before Yusleydis Smith (CUB) defeated Mariela Haug (CRC) in three sets, to level the tie. The doubles went the way of the Cubans with Yusleydis Smith and Amanda Gomez coming from behind to defeat Mariela Haug and Ariana Rahmanparast.
The two 16-and-under teams advance to the North/Central America and Caribbean final qualifying event, which will be held in Merida, Mexico, from 26 – 28 April. There they will compete against teams from Canada, Mexico and USA for the chance to qualify for the Junior Davis Cup & Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas to be held in Barcelona, Spain in September. Sixteen boys’ and fifteen girls’ teams contested the competition in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
